Physical Care and Storage of Audiovisual Materials

In this video, Marcia Segal, Processing Archivist at the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, provides guidelines and best practices for the appropriate physical care and storage of audiovisual materials. Some of the topics covered are: the importance of inventorying A/V collections; how to gather basic metadata for digitization vendors; how to assign unique identifiers to physical items; and best practices for handling, storing, and transporting A/V items. Segal also discusses some key issues institutions face when working with vendors for A/V digitization projects and emphasizes the importance of developing disaster plans and responses for A/V collections. This session was part of the 2015 Post-ATALM SHN Workshop held at the Library of Congress in Washington, DC on September 13-15, 2015
