Memorandum of Mutual Understandings (MOU)

This is an example of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) developed by the Karuk Tribe. This document can be used as a guide to develop your own MOU if your community is looking to collaborate with an external institution but want to first protect its rights over its cultural materials and traditional knowledge. The document was provided by Lisa Hillman, Karuk Food Security Project Coordinator, during her session on protocols and agreements at the 2015 ATALM pre-conference workshop sponsored by the Sustainable Heritage Network titled "Developing Tools to Navigate Intellectual Property and Protect Cultural Heritage," held in Washington DC on September 10, 2015.
