Protocol with Agreement for Intellectual Property Rights of the Karuk Tribe

This is an example of a Protocol with Agreement developed by the Karuk Tribe to recognize the inherent tribal sovereignty that the community asserts over all tribal knowledge, heritage and cultural resources when collaborating with external entities. This agreement can be used as a guide if your community is looking to establish a protocol to protect its rights to individual and collective property. The document was provided by Lisa Hillman, Karuk Food Security Project Coordinator, during her session on protocols and agreements at the 2015 ATALM pre-conference workshop sponsored by the Sustainable Heritage Network titled "Developing Tools to Navigate Intellectual Property and Protect Cultural Heritage," held in Washington DC on September 10, 2015.
