Indigenous Studies Film Initiative: Decolonizing Film Collections and Community Outreach
Description:
Documentary Educational Resources distributes an extensive catalog of works by and about Indigenous communities. The session addresses how decolonizing efforts are applied to ethnographic and documentary films, and highlights the importance of using preferred terminologies, the complexities of applying the term "Indigenous" to a global collection, and engaging filmmakers as bridges to contemporary communities. The session explores strategies for how older titles can have newfound meaning.
This session was part of the ATALM annual conference held in Temecula, California, on October 25-27, 2022.
