Artists and Culture Bearers in the Archives: Promoting Cultural Survival through Collections

Description:

In this session, culture bearers Mary Bordeaux, Vice President of Programs and Operations at First Peoples Fund; Lani Hotch, Executive Director of Jilkaat Kwaan Heritage Center; and Alfred "Bud" Lane III, President of the Northwest Weavers Basket Association, discuss how they leverage access to collections and archives to build their communities' cultural assets and raise awareness of their historic importance. Museum studies professional Mary Bordeaux (Sicangu Lakota), VP at First Peoples Fund, moderates this discussion with community-based cultural practitioners and leaders, identifying best practices and challenges with this approach while preserving and managing the tribal collection. This session was part of the ATALM annual conference held in Temecula, California, on October 8-10, 2019.
