2016 Pre-ATALM Developing Tools to Navigate Intellectual Property and Protect Cultural Heritage Workshop

Description:

This 2016 Pre-ATALM Workshop focused on two topics: 1) How to identify copyright issues with cultural heritage material and determine if materials are still protected by copyright or are in the public domain, and 2) The new Traditional Knowledge Labels initiative "Local Contexts" (www.localcontexts.org). Instructors Jane Anderson, Assistant Professor of Anthropology and Museum Studies at New York University; co-director of Local Contexts; Guha Shankar, Folklife Specialist at the Library of Congress Folklife Center; and Donald Soctomah,  Historical Preservation Officer of the Passamaquoddy Nation, demonstrate how tribes can develop their own Traditional Knowledge Labels for their cultural heritage held both within tribal contexts and also in institutions external to the tribe. The workshop was held on October 10, 2016 at the Sheraton Wild Horse Pass Resort & Spa, in Phoenix.
