2015 ATALM Archives Summit: Canadian Perspectives and Recommendations for Indigenous Archives

In this panel, Camille Callison, Indigenous Services Librarian at University of Manitoba, discusses the origins of the Canadian Aboriginal Archives Guide and recent developments that highlight the need to revise the Guide. She also talks about the impact of the Truth and Reconcilliation process on the discussion of ethics in relation to Indigenous collections, as well as progress in archival training and resources for describing Indigenous collections. Jonathan Pringle, Archivist at Northern Arizona University, observes similarities between the Academy of Canadian Archivists' (ACA) Code of Ethics and the Protocols for Native American Collections in the US. Finally, Alissa Cherry, Research Manager at the Audrey and Harry Hawthorn Library and Archives at the University of British Columbia, discusses the need for policies to guide decisions regarding access. This panel was part of the Archive Summit during the pre-conference activities for the 2015 ATALM annual conference in Washington, DC on September 9, 2015.
