Developing Policies and Protocols for the Culturally Sensitive Intellectual Properties of the Penobscot Nation Of Maine

Description:

The Penobscot Indian Nation (Maine, USA), with support from partners at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, developed tribal protocols, tools, and organizational structures to address intellectual property (IP) issues related to archaeology and heritage-based places. This document is a summary of that project and was used by James Francis, Director of the Cultural and Historic Preservation Department from the Penobscot Nation, for his session on governance at the 2015 ATALM pre-conference workshop sponsored by the Sustainable Heritage Network titled "Developing Tools to Navigate Intellectual Property and Protect Cultural Heritage," held in Washington DC on September 10, 2015.
